April 15th, the taxman's holiday! The one holiday that the post office doesn't close. In fact they help to perpetuate the myth that you must have your return in by midnight the 15th. That's right, the myth. Those who have loaned the IRS money interest free, ie taxpayers claiming a "refund" are not obligated to file at all. If the IRS owes you money there is no magic date by which you must assert the claim.
If you think you owe the IRS money, you have the option of filing for an extension of six months and the mere filing is the grant of an extension.
So why all the hoopla about April 15th at midnight? Fear. The only weapon the IRS has beyond the Tax Code itself. The anti-tax weapon is knowledge. If you buy a car or a house you read the contract before you make payments.. Well read the contract. Get a copy of the IRS Code, available in paperback at most bookstores, and read over the sections on filing deadlines.
